Small Business Commissioner David Eaton visited Melville this week, formally presenting the City with its Small Business Charter and recognising the commitment the City has made to being a Small Business Friendly Local Government (SBFLG).
Developed by the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC), the only State Government agency that focuses on supporting small business, the Small Business Friendly Local Governments Initiative was created to help build stronger, more productive relationships between small businesses and their local councils.
Small business accounted for more than 90% of all businesses in Western Australia and the City’s commitment to the Small Business Friendly Charter recognised their importance. In developing our business services, the City has been guided by the community’s aspirations from the Strategic Community Plan and feedback from local businesses as identified in our biennial business perceptions surveys.
In 2016, businesses told us we needed to strengthen our engagement with them and better communicate the long term vision of our City. Since then, we have introduced a number of new initiatives, including our flagship Annual Business Forum which will be held at the end of May. I encourage all small business owners and operators to register for it, if they haven’t already.
The recent 2018 business perceptions survey results has seen the City receive the highest rank of participating local governments for overall performance, and set ten industry high satisfaction standards including as an overall place to operate a business, as a governing organisation, value for money from Council rates , the city’s website and various others.
The Commissioner will soon return to Melville to speak at the annual Your Business Our Future Forum on 30 May, 2018, and again in August when local businesses will be invited to pop-in and have a ‘Coffee with the Commissioner’ at a local café.
