3 Bin Win

It’s a go for FOGO!

Following a unanimous Council decision , the City of Melville is pleased to announce that from July 2019 Melville residents will benefit from the 3-bin Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) system when it is rolled out to every household.

In 2017, the 3-bin FOGO system was successfully trialled across 7,000 households in a number of Melville suburbs and achieved a 66.5% diversion from landfill rate within the first six months, well above the State’s target of 65% diversion by 2020.

City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey said the Council and the City were extremely proud to be the first Perth metropolitan Local Government to trial and adopt the 3-bin system and thanked all the residents who had been involved in the trial for their important participation in reducing the City’s waste to landfill.

The Waste Authorities Draft Waste Strategy 2030 was also recently published and confirms the 3-bin FOGO model is the preferred waste management approach for the State and the only system to be able to achieve the State target of 65% diversion of waste from landfill by 2020, a target which the City of Melville is already close to achieving with a 63% diversion rate in the last financial year.

The Minister for Environment Hon Stephen Dawson MLC states within the Draft Waste Strategy 2030 that “we won’t be able to meet our 2025 recovery targets without all metropolitan local Governments adopting a 3-bin FOGO system.

The 3-bin FOGO system is different from other 3-bin garden organic (GO) systems that already exist in metropolitan Perth. The FOGO system takes food and gardening waste, combining them together in the same bin to create a high quality compost, whereas the GO system only takes gardening waste, leaving valuable food waste to go to landfill and produce harmful methane gases which add to global warming.

The City of Fremantle and Town of East Fremantle will also be rolling out a 3-bin FOGO system to their residents in 2019.

The City will provide more information to residents in the coming weeks.
